Overcoming Wigaphobia

To my discovery there is a literal disorder for  the fear of wigs and it’s called Maliaphobia. People who suffer from maliaphobia, experience their fear somewhat like an acrophobic fears heights. It is an unnatural fear that paralyzes and inhibits them from engaging in the area of their fear.

It is not unusual for a person suffering from maliaphobia to feel as though the wigs could come to life and attack them, individuals battling this issue are encouraged to seek professional assistance, However the remedy for wigaphobia can be found here.

Yes, I’m always somewhat surprised when I have clients come into my boutique and   express their  love  for hair extensions ( weaves) and  will even sport a pony tail but would never dare to sport a wig! I’m like wow, really.

The response is always pretty much the same. I get statements like, “I’m going to get brave and wear one,one day”, or “I’m scared it’s going to fall off” or someones going to jerk it off, and ”  “Wigs are too hot.”

It is interesting how the most seasoned of hair wearers will flat-out  reject a wig and do so, simply out  of fear. However I’ve noticed once I share a couple of vital points it’s like oh, Ok I’ll take that one ( wig) Shall we begin.

The Weft

It’s all in the weft. The picture above displays a pack of  Remy human hair extensions  ( brown) and an inner view of a wig. Notice the wig is made from hair  extensions. Be it synthetic or human, the weft is the binding design.

Once I flip a wig over and show a client the weft design  and say it’s  hair extensions simply sewn on an elastic type band in a head comfortable design. It’s like wow! followed by can it be sewn on? Yes it can. Can I try it on? sure, wow it is so light weight! my reply yes, it sure is and unlike hair extension( except for clip in) you can take it off whenever you please.

Sewing your wig on:

Clean &  condition your hair

Braid your own hair( cornrow style)

Spray between your braids with a braid spray.

Tighten and hook wig in back, put it on and use navigators

to adjust the position. Once wig is in place.

lift wig hair in strategic areas: two areas on each side in front

one on each side and  four in the back, clip hair up with hair

clasp and then take needle and thread ( weaving needle and thread)

and pierce weft and braid and sew as you would a sew in weave but its’

just in the areas you have clamped off.

If you want more security then prepare several additional sew in areas.

This is the format for a traditional non lace style wig.Think of the major time-saving factor here, your stylist can have you in and out in a fraction of the time it takes to sew in extensions.

Lace Front wigs can be sewn  in the same manner because they have the stretch cap weft design. Many clients will opt to have their hairline shaved in order to provide an excellent foundation for the bonding adhesives. Many  wear their lace fronts glued and braided. Full lace wigs made with flexible lace can be sewn in select spots as well.

Therefore, in my experience I have come to see many alternative hair users turn into full fledge hair Diva’s fearing nothing when it comes to the world of hair, embracing and exercising all the options that are available and at their disposal.
