Ouch, Wigs with attached Combs

Oh, the security! Wait oh, the pull on my hair-line,this cannot be good. While wig caps with up to four attached combs inside of the wig cap can appear to be a blessed creation, if not positioned correctly the combs can cause damage to your hairline resulting in thinning edges. Depending on where the combs are positioned and inserted into your hair marks the place for thinning hair to manifest.

The best way to enjoy the benefits of attached combs and thwart off potential follicle damage is to create a small braid that starts at one ear and continues around the neckline and ends at the beginning point, adding braiding hair to your braid is a plus, using a little holding gel in the process is an option.

The combs on the wig can now be inserted directly into the braid, this braid will accommodate the combs in the front and rear of your wigs, keeping the attached combs away from the scalp; if you are unable to make a small braid, cover your natural hair or scalp with a stocking style wig cap this can aid you, insert the wig combs into the stocking style wig cap this will provide stay on security while avoiding stress to your hair-line.

Side Note: If you have a massive amount of hair, lots of volume and you love wearing wigs for whatever the reason yay! However, sticking and shoving those attached wig combs randomly in your hair, while it will anchor your wig down it can also cause pulling on your follicles, which can lead to damage so, Secure and contain your natural hair and use the small circular braid and/or the wig cap to hold the attached combs in place.

Is 50/50 Human Hair and Futura Blend Real?

Someone ask a question is the human hair futura blend real hair?  In reality most companies produce a 70/30 blend. 70 % Futura and 30 %  human hair and while it is still  possible for many companies to add even less human hair to their blends; futura fiber  technology mimics human hair so well most consumers can hardly  tell the difference.

Another sought after answer is concerning the ability  to dye futura

The biggest draw back to date is futura fibers won’t take dye and curling futura takes time, products and a little know how. Depending on the amount of human hair in the blend and considering there is no coating on the human hair in the blend; being able to dye the human hair present in the blend should be a  real possibility.

The plus side definitely out weighs the negatives. The price is exceptional when compared to high quality human hair wig/extensions and the fibers are phenomenal  when it comes to longevity. Refreshing futura fibers with periodic ammonia baths allows you to style and repeat to infinity and beyond; seriously the fibers are great.

My Wig: The Hair Ball

Oh the joys of alternative hair !  Yeah what a wonderful aide for the pleasure and beautification of the masses; of course it is most fitting to express how wonderful alternative hair is in all its perfection. Well there is versatility and convenience, I could go on and on singing its praises  but what about that piece; you know that piece of alternative hair that just screams, Hi fresh in from Hades, how are ya! Yes, I am speaking of the bless it  human hair wig/extension with the cuticle not flowing in the same direction.  You may have experienced this. It matters not how soft to the feel the hair is nor does it matter that the tag says REMY and no never mind the pricey tag  if the hair isn’t constructed properly on the weft well  congratulations you’ve got a hair ball in the making.

Bleach baths for human hair work great at stripping the coating some companies  apply to their hair; yes, bleach as in Clorox does wonders stripping the coating; many major manufacturing companies coat the hair with a type of silicone to retain the hairs dye job; if you have ever tried to dye human hair and the color won’t take it is not that it isn’t human hair it most likely has a silicone coating; strip the coating and the hair will dye but not without a price; the hair is now more likely to dry out . Nevertheless bleach baths for human hair strangely enough  brings restoration back to lifeless dull looking human hair selections. However, not even the miracle of a bleach bath will help the destined hair piece that is to  become a hair ball.  No amount of spray nor conditioners will help it either’ it is not that the hair is bad, it is just not properly applied and sewn to the weft. If you will imagine the weft a long slender track of thread like material and the hair is being applied with the cuticle facing right and half way along the track someone starts applying the cuticle facing left  when completed and applied to patron be it wig or extension movement  occurs and  the hair moves towards each other and locks  add some products… hairspray, gels and  what have you and the hair will roll until yeah you got a matted tumbleweed hair ball thingy  forming along your neck line. A hair ball so fierce your hulk stance will kick  in as you grip and pull to separate the hair.

I recently experienced such a piece; it started out  straight soft ,Remy, costly and I recall after several wears  one side of my  selection stayed perfectly straight however on the opposite side the roll  up was happening; I was like perhaps this could pass for an asymmetrical  bob style,  I looked closer and said  well perhaps not. So, should you find yourself battling with a human hair selection and no matter what you try it still rolls  and becomes matted and tangled it’s not bad hair, it’s  badly constructed and  the only true remedy is to immobilize the selection by wearing it in a ponytail.

My Wig: The Pollen Catcher

When we hear the statement:  Using wigs for protective styling generally what comes to mind  is the fabulous benefits of tucking ones natural tresses away and creating healthier hair and a healthier scalp; thus  the understood is protecting ones natural hair  from the stressful  regimen it is accustomed to enduring day in and day out be it due to  extreme heat styling from hot blow dryers or high heat from ceramic plates and/or  curling wands not to mention chemical applications such as  perms and bleaching  agents.

However defining  protective styling need not stop there. An innumerable amount of  people suffer from some form of sinusitis due to pollen allergy every year and for many pollen season is upon us. A very common sight  in my corner of the world right now is observing  the massive pale yellow haze as it  dances  upon the wind until it reaches its destination and unfortunately that destination while not intentional ends up  being our person  (and our  dogs, cats ,cars,  oh wow )well due to this reality it is recommended that people shampoo and wash themselves ( clothing)  from head to toe to remove pollen from their person in order to keep issues at bay.

Washing ones hair thoroughly daily and if need be  several times daily is a cinch for those that have extremely oily scalps  however what about  those that do not; it would be severely unnerving  to shampoo, treat the hair and scalp with organic oils, butters and creme  only to return home with your hair in the hue of lemon  and  how about those that are  enduring  eczema or  seborrhetic dermatitis  both skin  and scalp conditions that  according to dermaharmony .com  is made worse with the use of hard water. http://www.dermaharmony.com/dermatitis/hardwaterdermatitis.aspx Multiple daily shampoos would excite a riot like never seen before bringing itching, flaking and major irritation can we say ouch and no thank you, please, Cue: The wig

What a wonderful way to look fabulously stylish while keeping your natural hair from becoming the  pollen catcher.

Tips:

Shaking your wig vigorously after wearing it outside will assist you in removing pollen residue. If there is product on your wig, (conditioners, pomades, oils) pollen could stick to the fibers in which case it could require that you rinse your wig thoroughly to remove pollen.  Either human hair or synthetic  hair wigs would easily do the trick; however if the need to rinse and or wash the wig becomes necessary daily due to pollen  build up and various debris synthetic traditional or futura fibers would be the better option; excessive washing of human hair wigs will result in them possibly drying out beyond

Unlocking Your Locks

For those that have worn their hair braided  for extended amounts of time in order to accommodate long-term wearing of alternative hair knows all too well  it is not uncommon to experience intertwining and locking.

Locking: Ones natural hair will without assistance  began to intertwine and lock this occurs often with the long-term wearing of braids; after several months  If ones natural hair is curly the ability of the hair to intertwine and lock increases; shampooing and conditioning the hair while still braided  and allowing it to remain braided and undisturbed will increase the possibility of locking; the use of needed and necessary products such as leave in conditioners, scalp oils and braid sprays will also promote locking.

The positive in all of this:   New growth,  at this point the hair is  in a state of rest the scalp and hair is cleansed with shampoo and conditioned while leaving the braid  somewhat undisturbed ( no combing, brushing) However without  proper braid release  the new growth will be lost. It can be frustrating to attempt braid removal only to discover the hair is so tangled, locked and knotty. It is not at all uncommon at this point for people to pull and Jerk their hair in an attempt to rip the locked hair a part thus causing damage and hair loss; while others avoid the hassle and just cut their hair.

The Solution: Raw Organic Coconut oil, a large tooth comb and time.

From the onset of releasing the braids apply coconut oil as you come to locked , tangled and or knotted  areas apply more oil now work the locked areas with your  fingers and  a large tooth comb gently comb and rub, comb and rub apply more oil if needed soon your  hair will  began to  unlock and free up;  It is best to section your hair and work small areas at a time; once braid is completely loose gently comb through apply more coconut oil if needed and work comb from scalp to end;

Shedding:

If you have worn your natural hair braided for several months; during this release process you will note lots of shedding hair the hair in your comb is shedding hair only!  Shedding naturally occurs and is held in place by the braid once the braid is released so are the shedding hairs. The longevity of braid wear will determine how much shed you experience. In other words if you have worn your hair braided and undisturbed for 6 months you should expect to see an incredible amount of shed. Shedding hairs are naturally released from the scalp over time. Shedding hairs DO NOT reveal a balding scalp; If bald spots are present you have experienced hair loss and finding the culprit should be the next order of the day.

Tips on process:

Depending on the density and curl pattern of your hair, keeping your natural hair sectioned and separated will prevent it from relocking while you are attempting to remove your braids If you’re natural hair has been braided for several months you may want to shampoo your hair a section at a time this will prevent, matting, intertwining and re-locking.

Section your hair into 4 quarters working each quarter separately. Shampoo, condition, comb gently band it off or plait a large braid. Once you have shampooed, conditioned, combed and towel dried your hair; apply some heated coconut oil to your scalp and work throughout hair the conditioning properties of this oil will soften your hair the  detangling properties of the oil makes  your hair more manageable. The end result with, no cutting , no jerking,  and no ripping  means you comb away only the released shed leaving you to fully enjoy your wonderful, vibrant and healthy new growth.

Futura Tip 101

H2O is an excellent styling aide with future fibers. In between deep cleaning the simplest way to make the lotion and styling spritz application effective wet the fibers with water then apply curling iron. If you saturate the fibers heavily with water turn the temp up a bit on your curling iron, the sizzling and steaming sound should be expected. However, don’t overly drench to the point of dripping. You will note when re-styling your futura fiber hair piece continual lotion application may not be warranted; just hair holding spritz and H2O.

Suggestion:

Place lotion, styling spritz and water in an empty spray bottle. Spritz and brush selection, once moistened apply curling iron. Ratio of water should be greater than the other two components.

Brush selection and apply lotion, then spritz the selection with styling holding spritz and then spray pure water onto selection brush and apply curling iron.

Can I Dry My Wig in a Clothes Dryer?

Yes,  Tis the season for some to be extremely busy and wearing alternative hair is a great go to when dressing to impress is a must for the company business holiday dinner, or how about  dashing about purchasing gifts and then there is the holiday brunch with some friends, not to mention all the parties, plays and parades to attend; with alternative hair you will never miss a beat, you’ll be exhausted yes, but even more so, you will be confident, extremely fabulous and ready to go.

Alternative Hair Holiday Time Saving Tips

*   Select the alternative hair style that compliments your ensemble and group it collectively well before your event(s): coordinating outfit, shoes, purse, jewelry and wig. Check

*   If you plan on dancing the night away, opt for a short style or pin-up your longer selection using a beautiful hair clasp,  think cool and cute and dance.

*   Having two selections that are identical, will give you more flexibility. You can wear one while  the other is being washed, conditioned and styled.

Drying Your Wig in the Clothes Dryer

After washing and conditioning your selection, place your towel blotted wig in a  nylon/cloth mesh pull string laundry bag. Containing your selection in such a fashion will avoid the mishap of strands getting caught in open crevasses of the dryer. If you desire to add a fabric sheet, place the sheet within the wig cap, using a small safety-pin to attach it,this will keep the sheet in place. Remove when cycle is complete.

Placing one to two wigs max per bag; this quantity ensures good air circulation to the selection. Set your clothes dryer, on NO HEAT and let it spin.  Drying time depends on the material human or synthetic and the density of the material.

So,  drying time is approximately 30 minutes and beyond, again depending on several factors: Number of wigs in bag, material of  the wigs, the thickness of the wig cap and the density of the hair materials. This is a great go to for those that employ natural drying for their selections.

Without a Mesh Laundry Bag

Now for those of you that are on the quest to explore new ventures and once you discover a new venture you find while excited yes, to test drive this new suggestion you quickly come to realize that you don’t have the item on hand that is suggested!  often times that would be me, so, not to be deterred I find myself brainstorming for other alternatives.

Not to fear, if you don’t have a laundry bag on hand, use a pillow case! Place the wig….. I would recommend only one wig at a time in the pillowcase, place it at the bottom and fold the pillow case down and pin  across with safety pins, no pins? tie a big knot in the pillowcase. Be careful to pin and/or knot only the pillowcase, keeping the wig free of either.

The key is to give the wig ample space, yet limit mobility of the wig while in that contained space and allow it to spin dry. Yeah!

I truly appreciate each and everyone of you that read my blog, thank you for your comments,  and thank you for sharing my blog with others!

Styling Futura Fibers with Cocoa Butter Lotion

Style reconstruction for Futura fibers

True Futura Fibers will bounce back with heat application  One of  its most alluring features is the fibers ability to take heat and produce styles.

Once you have washed your selection and have allowed it to dry naturally, style reconstruction can begin. ( Shampoo know how Oct Post)

Step One: Tangle elimination

Taking a  small section of hair at a time you will now began to comb through, holding the hair firmly comb from crown to ends. Encountering knots and tangles is not unusually. Combing and brushing to get hair moving uniformly is the goal.

Tools of elimination

Comb, wig brush, fingers, and  a boar  brush. The boar brush made with boar bristles is not recommended for traditional synthetic; the bristles tend to damage the hair and cause a frayed appearance. However, this is not the case with Futura fiber the bristle style  brush works exceptionally well.

After finger picking, combing and brushing your unit free of tangles it is time to apply products.

Products

Lotion works like a charm on Futura fibers, yes lotion as in body lotion. Hair lotions containing carrot oil, olive oil and the such work great  as well however they will  leave a heavy oily residue on the fibers, a better option is  body lotion.  Equate  Cocoa Butter Conditioning Body Lotion or Vaseline Cocoa Butter Deep Conditioning lotion works great; just enough oil and a nice scent too. You will also need Doo Gro Hurricane Hold Styling Spritz, mega hold and a ceramic  curling iron and a flat-iron.

Step Two:  Curl Restoration

Taking a small section of hair at a time apply lotion, then  brush. Now you will take that same portion of treated hair and slide the flat-iron over it. It may be necessary to apply a bit more lotion and brush,  you will now  apply the styling spritz and brush, next with the curling iron set on low heat, you will curl this treated portion of hair. Count to 20 and slowly release. A nice bouncy curl! Tip if your curl is too limp, simply brush hair back out and reapply the curling iron, hold then slow release. If you’re curling iron temp is on high you will not get a curl, the hair will remain straight.

Refresh:  For curls, curling iron must be set on low, hair must be untangled, apply  ample amount of  hair products, hold the iron in place  count to twenty and slow release. Snipping the ends of the hair after curling is recommended. snipping at this time will help you retain more length.

Tip:  Ammonia  baths are recommended for heavy oil, pollution and hair styling product build up.  One can return to using their moisture rich shampoo for future washings and apply the unit to an ammonia bath when once again you find your unit is heavily soiled from build up.

Personal Note: I have been amazed at how the Futura fiber  continues to bounce back after multiple washings, with the aid of heat, brushing, lotion and styling spritz!

Cons: Takes time to brush, treat, heat and curl your selection.

The original curl pattern will be eliminated and can only be re-created if heat styled by a curling instrument that can duplicate that style.

Pro: You can wash, style  and wear your selection for months and months  to come.

Cleaning Futura Fibers with Ammonia Baths

  The Situation

A client recently asks me to restore their standard made futura fiber lace front wig. The client stated she had worn the wig constantly on a daily basis with an occasional overnight for the span of a month and a half. The client’s selection was 18 – 20 inches in length and the style was a loose spiral curl.

  The Issue

As with most curly/crinkle style selections, the curl definition is the first to go. While the styles are quite lovely at first it is not at all uncommon for the curl to diminish with wear; now consider product build up on the strands, at some point curly selections will consist of slight curl patterns amidst a swirl of frizz and a dash of grit. Now, avid alternative hair wearers would say at this point their wig resembled that of a bird’s nest and the next step would be a toss in the trash or for the frugal wig consumer  a baggie where the selection is retired to an undisclosed location, typically a dresser drawer,  but wait there is hope.

Restoration Tips for the Frugal Wig Wearer

The   untangling: With your selection in hand gently starting at the crown run your fingers through your selection until you reach the ends, encountering matted tangles should be expected, Starting front left to right or front right to left working from one side to the other, top to bottom keeping the hair flowing vertically is key.

Note: the undercarriage of wigs located  to the back and closet to the neck will often become very tangled and matted with wear; this is especially so with longer in length selections, this area may require light brushing with a wig brush. Hold the wig firmly and apply brush to base line of cap and brush down to the ends. Depending on the severity of the tangles one may have to work a smaller section of hair at a time.

The Cleaning: In a large basin fill with one gallon of hot water, add 1/2 cup of Ammonia all-purpose cleaner. If your selection has been in daily use for two months or more and is more soiled (product residue, dirt, lint etc.) 1 cup Ammonia to one gallon of hot water may be more effective.  Place Futura fiber wigs, hair pieces or extensions into the solution. Submerge and allow your selection to soak for 5 to 7 minutes. With tongs or while using gloves lift, submerge, lift submerge repeatedly 3 to 4 times, careful to never twist, bunch nor wring your selection. Now rinse the selection in clear hot water. The temperature of the water can be hot from your tap, or to the boiling point from your range or micro-wave. Water temp chosen would again be based on how soiled your alternative piece is.   Older more soiled selection would benefit from a hotter water application. Allow your pieces to dry naturally.

Note: An Ammonia bath consist of only ammonia no shampoos or conditioners should be applied.  Ammonia: lemon scent or original, both are acceptable.

Futura  Fiber

Is an advanced technological breakthrough, for today’s alternative hair consumer. The fibers ability to mimic human hair at an astounding cost difference makes it the more likely choice for the more cost conscious consumer.  Using moisture rich shampoos, conditioners, thermal heating aids hairspray and the like works great for futura fiber; however over time with repeated applications one will run into product build up; this residue coats the strands, the residue will act as a magnet and attract grit such as lint, dust particles, Pollen and such. The ammonia bath strips the strands of these elements and provides the basis for style reconstruction of your selection. Our next post will address  the style reconstruction of futura fibers  following an ammonia bath.
